Toys & Oddities

Working with found and recycled toys and bits takes me back to my childhood memories. As I begin to work on a new piece the ideas come into my head and usually make me laugh as I try to push the idea further and add content to the piece.

Batman: 0, Bad Guys: 14

9 x 31 x 9 Inches

Batman… it’s not often that Batman is taken down by his nemesis. This piece reminds me of the movie Darby O’Gill and the Little People from my childhood. The Batman doll along with Lego figurines is mounted on found wood from mountain hiking.

Bella

15 x 12 x 7 Inches

Bella… this has been one of my favorite baby heads. It seems to have such a sweet face and spirit that I have loved to paint previously. I’ve added dried flowers to compliment her and finished up with polka dots.

Cleithrophobia

38 x 20 x 20 Inches

Cleithrophobia… after accidentally tossing the baby bear onto the mother bears lap, right next to the bird cage, the idea came into my head to combine all three. I ponder why I tacked up the momma bears head, put it inside the cage and raised it above the body on a post. Integrating the piece with grape vines, artificial ivy and dried roses.

Game of Thrones

40 x 40 x 38 Inches

Game of Thrones… rediscovering a rusted coffee can which I thought would be perfect for a crown started this piece. I had the vintage doll and made the suit of armor out of coke tabs. Next in the project was his chair made of tree limbs, a vintage meat tenderizer for a scepter, fall leaves to represent the tree of life from the north and misc. pieces to complete the look.

Nature Family

24 x 22 x 10 Inches

Nature Family… the two vintage dolls had the most loving expressions on their faces and I added a vintage baby to complete their love. Intertwining everything with a vine representing the connection with each other.

Winter

24 x 11 x 10 Inches

Winter… this poor dolly didn’t have any legs. After adding legs made out of twigs I kept going adding more twigs to her hand and head. I love the natural elements.

Childhood Memories

13 x 8 x 8 Inches

Childhood Memories... I just loved this vintage doll head and her naive expression. I encapsulated bouncy balls, monster finger puppets, jacks and a golf ball in a glass bowl, all reminiscent of my childhood memories.

Dee Dee

10 x 15 x 10 Inches

Dee Dee… without any idea of the end result I started attaching left over diamond dots on a vintage doll head, which reminded me of the old school bathing caps and viola the idea revealed itself. I made her a bathing suit out of vintage lace, cut a remnant out of a beach towel, added sand paper to the wooden base and found shells, a shell candle holder among other misc. pieces to resemble a beach scene.

19 x 5 x 5 Inches

Good Angel… this angel is one of three weathered posts that I added a doll head, wings and recycled beaded bottle cover for interest.

Jane

19 x 9 x 6 Inches

Jane… I had a left over bear body and two large doll legs to support it which started this piece. The head naturally came to make Jane, Tarzan’s wife.

La Katrina

30 x 12 x 12 Inches

La Katrina… this doll started off as a wedding doll thrift store find. It was the end of October during covid that I was reminded of the Dias DE Los Muertos tradition and applied it to this doll. I started with hand painting her face and neck. Next, I added black lace and black and white artificial flowers. The hat was made of a coat hanger and left over tulle with more artificial flowers and trim.

Playground Days

15 x 11 x 6 Inches

Playground Days… Ernie’s doll body was the perfect start for this project. I encapsulated a vintage doll head with some alphabet beads and rubber ducky buttons. For the base I used old wooden blocks glued together.

Queen of the Dinosaurs

17 x 17 x 5 Inches

Queen of the Dinosaurs… is a collaboration between a t-rex toy body and a vintage doll head. I painted the green on her face for integration and added the Queens Jewels by way of tiara, necklaces, earrings and ring.

The Beat Goes On

22 x 12 x 12 Inches

The Beat Goes On… my sister was cleaning out her garage which was a haven for recycled toys and stuff. I found an old mini t.v. and thought of shows from my childhood. I remembered the show “Laugh In” which was so cool back in the day. I decided to do a 70’s theme and painted the doll body to resemble the groovy patterns from the show. Her head fit inside the t.v. so I added 70’s flowers to the outside. Needing a base to stand on I used some old records and found a Sony and Cher record too!

Sold Out

The Storyteller

12 x 14 x 15 Inches

The Storyteller… for no particular reason I imagined Kermit reading a book. In order to realize this idea I added vintage golden books from my kids. Living in New Mexico the Native tradition of the storyteller came to mind which is usually represented by an elderly person with many children on and around them.

Things That Go Bump in the Night

23 x 16 x 13 Inches

Things That Go Bump in the Night… I was gifted an old creepy crawler toy and the goo still worked after 30+ years! After spending the day making creepy crawlers they needed a scene so I started gluing them on a stuffed animal with vintage doll head and added bits and pieces to complete. The box lights up the doll from below.
